SQMS Update: April 1, 2020

Hello Everyone! Just wanted to pop on to give you a quick update as to what administration and teachers are doing!

Administration teams from the SSRCE have been meeting virtually everyday to help figure out what the Learning Continuity Plan will look like in our schools.

Mr. Stewart and I have been in contact with the teachers all week and they have been working VERY hard to contact families and are working to get something in place for our amazing students!

Families: if you have NOT received contact from your child's homeroom teacher, please send me a message and we will sort it out for you!

Things students can expect in the next couple of days if you have internet and a device:

-an invitation to Google Classroom and/or Showbie for your courses from your teachers

-Wednesday, April 8th is expected to be the start of when teachers will be launching their Learning Continuity Plan

That is all for now. Stay tuned to FB, sqms.ednet.ns.ca, Email alerts and Twitter for the latest! Please share this to anyone who might be a part of the SQMS family!

Email to Families- March 31, 2020

March 31, 2020

Dear Families,

In the next few days, staff from South Queens Middle School will be in contact with you via an email or a phone call.  The purpose of this contact will be for the following:

a)    to find out how you/your family are doing during this Co-Vid 19 situation

b)   to find out if you/your family are in need of anything that we can provide for you

c)    to find out if you/your family has access to an internet connection

d)   to find out if you/your family has access to a reliable device (i.e. computer/laptop, tablet/ipad, phone, etc.) in which internet can be used

If you do not receive a phone call or an email from a staff member by the end of the week, please email Terry Stewart (Principal) at sqmsprincipal@ssrce.ca or Stacy Thorburn (Vice Principal) at sqmsvp@ssrce.ca and we will return your email as soon as possible.

As you may have heard today schools in Nova Scotia will remain closed until at least May 1, 2020.

Just as you are waiting for updates, we are also waiting to hear what the next steps will be in terms of educating our students.  Please continue to monitor your email for Alerts from the Regional Center and/or South Queens Middle School for updates.  You can also find information/updates on the SQMS website (sqms.ednet.ns.ca), on the South Queens Middle School Facebook page and on the SQMSWildcats Twitter page.

You are all in our thoughts!  We hope everyone is safe and healthy!

Letter from Education Minister Zack Churchill- March 30, 2020

Please find below a letter from Education Minister Zack Churchill regarding the latest announcement about school closure

Update: NS Education and Early Childhood Development- March 30, 2020

Public schools across the province will remain closed until at least May 1, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This closure will be reassessed as the situation changes.

We recognize that these are extraordinary times. Government and our public education system have made learning a priority, while still protecting the health and safety of students and teachers.

During this time, students and families will have access to e-learning and at-home options that will be assignment and project focused, so they may continue their education.

We understand this is a challenging time for families. The Learning Plan is not meant to add more stress. If the Learning Plan is causing additional stress, please contact your child’s teacher or principal to discuss.

Students who need additional support will continue to receive it. We are all in this together and we appreciate everyone’s patience and commitment to education.

We have created a website with tips on reading, ideas for planning and appropriate online tools at https://curriculum.novascotia.ca/learning-home .

Any student who is on-track to graduate will graduate. Any student on track to move to the next grade will pass.

Provincial exams and assessments are cancelled for the remainder of the year.
